MPA PresidentThe Secretary's Desk
Timothy F. McCusker,Jr.
MPA Secretary
Deputy Superintendent - Cambridge Police Department

February Update

annual dues
The 2007 membership packages with stickers, membership cards and department rosters will be mailed on December 1, 2007 to each local secretary. The dues are $20 per year for active members and $10.00 per year for retired members. Each member is entitled to two (2) stickers as part of their membership fee and may request additional stickers for $1.00 each.

Of the $20.00 dues, $8.00 may go to the Mass Police Political Action Committee (MPA-PAC). The contribution to the PAC is voluntary but declining to participate will not reduce your annual dues figure. Since the PAC is a separate and distinct account as required by law, we are asking that when you send your dues that you include two (2) separate checks; one made payable to the Massachusetts Police Association, Inc for dues and another payable to the MPA-PAC.

Example: Department with 85 active members and 15 retired members. You should receive 100 membership cards and 200 stickers. Your payment breaks down as follows:

To Mass Police (dues) 85 active members x $12.00 = $1,020.00

15 retired members x $6.00 = $ 90.00

Total to Mass Police Assoc $1, 110.00

To MPA-PAC 85 members x $8.00 = $ 680.00

Retired 15 members x $4.00 = $ 60.00

Total $ 740.00

Your assistance with this procedure will help us greatly with our bookkeeping. Please remember that your dues are due in April (MPA by-laws, Article 2, section 2.2) PLEASE NOTE: IF your 2007 dues have not been paid you are not a member in good standing and your department will not receive the 2007 Membership Package. Additionally, if you are a member of the MPA Legal Defense and your dues are not paid to the association, your membership in the Legal Defense is also in jeopardy. If this applies to you, you are advised to contact the MPA Secretary immediately

roster updates
It is also vitally important that you update your rosters each year before you return them to the Secretary. You wouldn't believe how many calls we get during the year from members who did not get their Sentinel because their addresses were not updated. It is also important to record the sticker numbers you assign to each member. This is so that we can track abuses in the distribution of these stickers to persons not authorized to display them.

wage survey
Lastly, we ask that you complete the wage survey form that is included. This information is published as a benefit to you but the book is only as good as the information you provide. In the future we may withhold Wage Survey CD Disks from those members whose department does not furnish any information. The wage survey is now on a disk thanks to you.
