Washington DC Memorial
May 15, 2008 - Doug Mellis -- MPA Executive Board -- Each year since 2000 members of the Massachusetts Police Association Executive Board who have attended the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Police Week ceremonies have been posting memorial placards at the police wall. These stickers have been prepared by Paul Foerster of Longmeadow, Ma and have resulted in many words of praise from the survivors of these “Line of Duty” officers’ family members as well as co-workers.
As you can this year we have modified the placard. Instead of individual stickers we have replicated the panel number with all the names and printed a total of 87 individual placards containing the names of our fallen Massachusetts members. Unfortunately there are some panels that contain more than 10 names of our fallen members.
We will continue to honor our fallen members each and every year at this ceremony as well as at the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial at Ashburton Park at the State House in Boston. The Massachusetts Police Association with a membership of over 22,000 and the oldest association in Massachusetts having started in1900, has paid for the inscription of all the names on both Memorials and will continue to do so.
This year’s Washington Candlelight was the 20th anniversary and the 18th for me as I had started attending in 1990 when a participant in the East Coast memorial run to raise money for the Memorial. I have many fond memories of these candlelight services have been in the presence of many survivors and their immediate families like Doris Beauregard Shecrallah, Ann Schivina, Carole Perry, Bob Shaw, Deb Noyes, the Vitales, the Griffiths and many more. I believe this remembrance of these officers is a small tribute for what they have paid for with their lives. It has been an honor to have a part in this tribute and I look forward to the day when there are no names to be added.
