House Passes Casino Bill

Senate Tees Up Pension Reform Today

Late Wednesday, the House approved expanded gambling legislation that called for three casinos and a slot parlor. Our concerns over jurisdiction were addressed giving the host community police departments jurisdiction. The agreement covering public safety would be negotiated between the gaming commission and the host community. You may recall, last years House version had those negotiations between the colonel of the state police and locals.

This afternoon, the Senate will take up pension reform. We will continue to fight against these unfair changes. We have also filed amendments, including our $15,000 increase in retirement earnings. Call your Senator and voice your concerns, as well as ask support of amendment 2 filed by Senator Rodrigues.

Alert Detail Cop Captures Bank Robber

A Chelsea police officer working a detail captured a suspected bank robber, who was spotted leaving a Sovereign Bank branch after a heist this morning, authorities said.

Police Chief Bryan Kyes said Jason Englen, 29, of Chelsea was arrested by Lieutenant Tom Dunn at a red light on Revere Beach Parkway, after a witness saw him outside the bank on Everett Avenue following the 10:30 a.m. robbery.

“Lieutenant Dunn heard the description of the suspect and was about to send police to his house when he spotted the man at a red light and pulled him over,” said Kyes. The chief said Englen will be charged with the Sovereign Bank robbery and a robbery at the Eastern Bank on Sept. 12. Kyes praised a witness outside the Sovereign Bank who saw Englen leave the bank and followed him toward Route 16, where he notified a Chelsea police officer on detail who put a description on the radio.
